Arts Alive in Shropshire and Herefordshire

About

Since 1999 Arts Alive has been bringing a wide range of professional performances to rural communities in Shropshire and Herefordshire. Arts Alive also operate Flicks in the Sticks – the biggest rural cinema network in the UK, with over 500 screenings a year in village and community venues.

Arts Alive tours around 130 performances a year to over 70 venues, made possible by our fantastically dedicated promoters. Particular programming emphases are multi-cultural work, theatre for younger children (Kinder Gardens). We are also developing a new collaborative theatre piece on the theme of ‘urban meets rural’, working with Black Country Touring and Kali Theatre.

Arts Alive in Shropshire and Herefordshire was established as a Charitable Trust in 1999 (charity no. 1075794) and is managed by a Board of Trustees.

It was formed from a merger between two distinct touring schemes covering the two counties of Shropshire and Herefordshire. The merger was seen as an opportunity to develop a stronger organisation with a more cost effective administration base and a grant from the Baring Foundation assisted us through the transition.

We currently have 8 Trustees who take overall responsibility of the organisation. Trustees are from a mix of backgrounds and include a retired solicitor, a gallery owner, retired civil servant and arts marketing professional. Two trustees are also promoters.

Arts Alive organises about 1000 events a year including music, drama, dance, film, puppetry and storytelling. Arts Alive is dedicated to providing local people in rural areas with the opportunity to choose and promote professional arts events in their local venue.

Flicks in the Sticks is the touring cinema branch of Arts Alive, taking big screen films to rural communities whose access to the cinema is severely limited. Through Flicks, these communities have access to great films on their doorstep, at affordable prices and in a friendly and familiar atmosphere. As well as Shropshire and Herefordshire, Flicks also works in Mid Wales, the Malvern Hills region and areas of Cheshire.

Arts Alive and Flicks work with over 130 venues, including village halls, community centres, churches and woods; in fact any suitable local space.

Artful Management are the administrators of Arts Alive. www.artfulmanagement.co.uk

Aims

Promoting professional arts events in partnership with local people bringing high quality and affordable arts events to within easy travelling distance of every person in Shropshire, Herefordshire and surrounding areas.

By working with rural communities we aim to bring good quality local, regional, national and international artists and films to local venues so that people living locally can have access to exciting, moving and entertaining performances.

There are of course other venues in Herefordshire and Shropshire (Theatre Severn, Ludlow Assembly Rooms & Hereford Courtyard) who you should check out, but we are confident you will love the local and intimate nature of the village venues.

So for the best in Shropshire and Herefordshire arts come and see us!
