Yes! Yes! UCS! by Townsend Theatre Productions
Rural touring stalwarts Townsend Theatre Productions present the story of the Upper Clyde Shipbuilders ‘Work-In’ of 1971/72. With the Glasgow and Clydebank shipyards under threat of closure from lack of investment from the new Tory government, shop stewards including Jimmy Reid and Jimmy Airlie began a new form of peaceful protest designed to show that workers weren’t just willing to work, but that work existed and that unemployment was a political choice.
As the workers took over the yards to continue building ships support came from all over Britain, including the worlds of poets and musicians – The Dubliners, Billy Connolly, Dick Gaughan and John Lennon & Yoko Ono to name but a few.
Featuring live rock and folk music of the era and a powerful theatrical story-telling style, the messages of hope, social justice, and the fight for the right to work are brought vividly to life in another of Townsend Theatre’s unique portrayals of social history.
