About
Highlights was established in 1997 to encourage and enable the promotion of a wide range of national, international and diverse companies to isolated communities at affordable prices. In partnership with a network of around 90 volunteer groups, we organise over 160 high quality professional events per year in village halls, schools and community centres. The programme includes theatre, dance, music and childrens shows. Highlights was originally set up to work with isolated rural communities in the North Pennines. The area has suffered from long term economic decline (it was once the biggest lead mining area in Europe), resulting in pockets of high unemployment, isolated communities, poor transport links and declining local services. We have since expanded and now work in Cumbria (districts of South Lakes, Eden and rural Carlisle) , County Durham (former districts of Teesdale and Weardale) and the whole of Northumberland.
